The Founding of the ABA
The Australian Bulb association was initially sponsored by a few Australian
bulb enthusiasts and nurseryman, who organised the founding meeting at
Albury-Wodonga during September 2001.
The A.B.A. (Australian Bulb Association) came about as a
result of the study of geophytic (bulbous) plants of Southern America and
South Africa by Dirk Wallace and Daryl Geoghegan over a 5 year period in the
early 1990’s. Growing some 2000+ species during this time, many from seed to
flower, both of them produced bulb lists and started to communicate with
Australian bulb enthusiasts. Having a newsletter as part of our format, it
became evident that many folks wanted to join together, have a Newsletter and
Journal, and receive updates about bulb culture and plant availability, and
develop freindships with other enthusiasts consistent with the formation of
an Association.
ABA Email Forum
At
the inception of the ABA, two email forums were created; the Australian_Bulbs
forum was followed by
a specific forum for the sharing of images of bulbous plants - the AB_Images
forum:
Anyone can freely subscribe to each
of these email
forums in Yahoo Groups; the e-mail addresses are provided below.

The Annual Bulb Journal
of the ABA
An informative Annual Journal is produced for members
who have a journal subscription. The journal contains excellent articles by a
number of members. (Click to see contents pages)
Our aim is to publish interesting and enjoyable bulb information for all
levels of bulb enthusiasts and gardeners. More information about Journal
subscription can be found in the Membership form
Changes to ABA
There
have been a number of changes to the ABA which were negotiated with members.
These include the alteration of the ABA to primarily a members web society
without physical public meetings. We are conducting a couple of virtual
meetings annually via a meetings styled web group.
In addition the Societies name and URL
domain name was changed to reflect that it is a web based society of bulb
growers and bulb fanciers.
The quarterly journal been displaced by a
year book / journal to take its place. These measures are expected to ease
burden on the funding requirements of the society and potentially contribute
to a gradual build up of membership and funds to a stage where it may be
possible to re-consider the societies capacity to widen its membership
activities.
